Indoor Herb Garden
As with most gardening, herb gardening can be seasonal. But does it have to be? You can
start an indoor herb garden today and have fresh herbs all year round. Because herbs have so many uses it
is nice to have them readily available whether you want to use them for medicinal purposes, for cooking, for
cleaning or just for a calming or aromatic cup of tea.
Besides having these savory herbs at your fingertips, another advantage of an indoor herb garden is that you can
grow them organically. This is because they can be more easily protected from all the various pests and insects
that always seem to be in abundance outdoors. Inside your home there is very little need for using any type of
herbicide. You can provide fresh, pure, and chemically free herbs such as basil and oregano for your family in your
favorite recipes.
To start you will want to choose which of your favorite herbs to grow. Do you want to grow aromatic herbs or
culinary herbs or medicinal herbs? By doing a little research online you can find out what type of soil and
nutrients the different herbs require. Read up on how they grow naturally in the wild. Learn about the different
uses and characteristics of each herb. Different types of basil, chervil, parsley and marjoram all do very will
when grown indoors.
Next, choose the right type of pot and right sized pot, this is also very important. If the pot is too small the
plant can quickly become root bound which will stunt its growth. The pot should also have holes in the bottom
allowing for proper drainage. Find out how much and how often to water your indoor herb garden. When growing plants
and herbs indoors you can easily over water.
Fill your pots with good, organic soil. Good soil is one of the key ingredients in preparing your indoor herb
garden. You can usually find a ready mixed organic soil at your local nursery or in the garden department of your
local home improvement center. Also, find a nice spot where they will receive adequate sunlight. They should get at
least five hours of sunlight a day.
Pruning is very important for herbs. By pruning your herbs often you will see healthy bushy growth.. By cutting
and using your herbs regularly they should continue to grow and thrive. Either snip off short pieces or cut them
back by at least two thirds.
Some amount of fertilizing will need to be done. Visit your local nursery for advice. Usually a few drops of a
liquid fertilizer once a week should be sufficient. By providing a good environment for your herbs you will have
healthier plants.
Start an indoor herb garden today and discover how rewarding and useful indoor gardening can be. You may also
discover that most herbs thrive and will grow year around, others may only grow for a season and have to be
replanted. Whatever the case may be, an indoor herb garden can be an enjoyable pastime.
